Principal Engineer - Mechanical Systems Design

OVERVIEW:
In this role, you will provide expertise as a Principal-level Mechanical Systems Design Engineer for the advanced nuclear reactor projects in the area of fuel handling. In this role, you will create and review design solutions for fuel handling equipment, structures, and process systems for the Natrium Generation IV Reactor. Candidates must have extensive experience in equipment design and qualification. Experience in equipment operation, maintenance, and fabrication is also valued. This Engineer will work as part of a high functioning team of engineers and scientists working on interfacing systems to ensure the successful delivery of plant design.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Design nuclear fuel handling systems and sub-systems from requirements through final design.
- Coordinate and integrate analyses (thermal, seismic, structural, etc.) into plant design.
- Ensure correct application of design codes, including ASME, ANS, ASTM, IEEE, NFPA, etc.
- Provide technical direction and guidance on nuclear and non-nuclear design standards.
- Analyze and allocate regulatory criteria to mechanical and process system designs.
- Support and maintain schedule adherence for system design activities and overall plant design.
- Manage drawing packages for system designs, including P&IDs, 3D models, and interface drawings.
- Interface with multidisciplinary design teams to specify system design and performance criteria.
- Oversee supplier projects, ensuring delivery of data and performance of technical reviews.
- Establish system requirements and specifications for major plant equipment.
- Propose and initiate testing programs for plant system qualification and support test execution.
- Generate design packages, including calculations, design reports, drawings, and specifications.
- Develop and review technical documents, such as System Design Descriptions and Engineering Design Specifications.
- Support licensing activities related to Safety Analysis Reports.
- Participate in design reviews as plant systems and subsystems are established.
REQUIREMENTS:
- B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
- 20+ years of experience in mechanical systems design, with a focus on complex systems.
- Proven experience in nuclear fuel handling systems design.
- Expertise in high-temperature design and multi-discipline integration.
- Proficiency in ASME BPVC, Section III, Division 1, and/or Section VIII.
- Experience with nuclear reactors or similar high-performance systems.
- Strong technical writing, communication, and presentation skills.
- Self-starter with the ability to lead and coordinate design teams with minimal direction.
- Ability to manage projects with competing objectives and design constraints.
- Experience working to quality standards such as ASME NQA-1 or ISO 9001.
- High degree of trust, integrity, and a desire to foster teamwork.
