Our client in Norcross, GA, which provides safety-related equipment, testing, and engineering solutions to the nuclear power industry and other critical infrastructure sectors, is looking to hire a Materials Analysis Lab Manager. This is a permanent, direct-hire position that offers a competitive compensation package.

OVERVIEW: 

The Material Lab Analysis Supervisor leads the materials team in examining and testing the physical and chemical properties of materials purchased and/or developed by the company.


PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES: 
  • Analyze organic and inorganic compounds to determine chemical composition via Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), Combustion Infrared Detection (LECO), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF).
  • Analyze metallic and nonmetallic characteristics via Rockwell Hardness Test, Knoop/Vickers Hardness Test, and Shore A Durometer Hardness Test.
  • Review and approve analytical results generated by material analysts.
  • Approve Standard Operating Procedures for chemical and physical analysis of materials to assure compliance with nuclear industry requirements (ASME NQA-1, 10CFR50 Appendix B, 10CFR21), following ISO 17025 test best practices.
  • Train, qualify, and maintain material analysts’ proficiency in accordance with the UCI quality program.
  • Disposition Nonconformity Reports (NCR) and Corrective Action Reports (CAR), including root cause and impact analysis.
  • Provide support and guidance to Engineering, Purchasing, Sales, and Production to ensure that new products and changes to existing products comply with internal requirements and applicable regulations and standards.
  • Provide support to cross-functional UCI departments regarding material evaluation issues or reverse engineering.
  • Assist the sales department with proposal efforts.
  • Provide input and data to support UCI’s ongoing budgeting and strategic planning process.
  • Establish departmental goals and objectives that provide world-class materials performance to the organization.
  • Establish and track meaningful departmental reports/measurements.
  • Analyze reports, measurements, and external benchmarks to identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Proactively lead the materials team to continuously improve processes and procedures.
  • Fully embrace UCI’s quality system to identify opportunities and drive continuous improvement.
  • Manage all departmental functions to ensure goals and objectives are consistently achieved.
  • Ensure timely receipt of materials to support the production schedule.
  • Schedule material demands and work order completion dates in the system to support the production schedule.
  • Proactively manage material and work order exceptions and provide feedback to Engineering & Project Management on critical information.
  • Interface with project managers and production scheduling to establish workflow, including release dates and releasing order dates.
  • Proactively obtain industry trend data and provide timely feedback to senior leadership.
  • Adhere to company policies, procedures, and ethics codes and ensure that they are communicated and implemented within the department.
  • Perform other duties assigned to ensure the efficiency of the company.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
  • 4-year technical degree from an accredited institution.
  • Hands-on materials testing experience (both metallic and non-metallic)
  • 5+ years working experience in a testing environment with experience in planning & supervision.
  • Experience in Optical Emission Spectroscopy (OES), Combustion Infrared Detection (LECO), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometer (XRF), Rockwell Hardness Test, Knoop/Vickers Hardness Test, and Shore A Durometer Hardness technique.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to effectively delegate work to subordinates and evaluate and positively influence performance.
  • Exceptionally high level of commitment to the success of individuals and overall projects.
  • Management style that complements UCI’s long-standing culture of high integrity throughout all areas of internal and external business activity.
  • Willing to put in extra effort and hours as needed.
  • Strong mechanical and/or electrical aptitude.
  • Ability to handle and use laboratory chemicals.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 
  • Experience in the following commodities: plastics, metals, coatings.
  • Understanding of products and services supplied by the company and how the quality department supports the company and customer. Specialty product knowledge (e.g., Silicone Rubber Tape - various part numbers).
  • Knowledge of the EPRI guidelines, 10 CFR50, NQA-1, and other standards as they relate to company products and services.
  • Understanding of Fusion Database for purchase orders, NCRs, to review and/or check status.
  • Understanding of the technical requirements to meet various dedication criteria (e.g., types of dedication EQs, mild vs. harsh, various IEEE standards).
