Talascend is currently seeking a Nuclear Design and Shielding Engineer for a long-term, remote contract career opportunity with our client in Bellevue, WA.

Overview

The Nuclear Design and Shielding Engineer will perform radiation shielding design and analysis for advanced nuclear reactors and a medical isotopes separations facility. This role involves radiation source term development, sensitivity studies, and computational modeling to support reactor design and safety.

Responsibilities

• Perform radiation shielding design and analysis, including dose calculation, activation rates, DPA rates, energy deposition, and gas production rates.
• Develop radiation source term based on materials activation analysis for non-fuel in-vessel components.
• Design and analyze new systems to solve complex engineering problems.
• Execute sensitivity studies to validate modeling assumptions and improve computational methods.
• Establish and maintain documentation of analysis results and shielding design solutions.

Requirements

• B.S. degree in Nuclear Engineering or equivalent experience with 5+ years of related experience; advanced degree preferred.
• Knowledge of nuclear reactor design concepts and experience in core and radiation shielding analysis.
• Experience in criticality safety and strong computational expertise.
• Proficiency with radiation shielding software such as MCNP, Serpent, SCALE, OpenMC, and others.
• Experience with depletion software like ORIGEN and nuclear core analysis tools such as DIF3D and MC2.
• Familiarity with computer-aided drafting tools such as SolidWorks, SpaceClaim, or Cubit.
• Strong knowledge of nuclear and numerical methods, including activation analysis and isotopic depletion.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Ability to work within regulatory guidelines for nuclear reactor design.
• Preferred experience with fast reactors, software development for nuclear applications, and programming skills in Python, C++, or Fortran.
• Experience working in an NQA-1 quality program is desired.
• Ability to maintain software by implementing enhancements and bug fixes.
• High degree of trust, integrity, and teamwork.
